Now pluck up they hempe, and go beat out the seed,

and afterward water it as ye see need.

But not in the river where cattle should drink,

for poisoning them and the people with stinke.42

THE GREAT HARRY, PART OF THE HEMPEN FLEET OF HENRY VIII. ILLUSTRATION COURTESY OF JIM HARTER.

In How to Use All Land Profitably (1607), J. Norton opines on behalf of this misunderstood crop, admonishing that “many crofts, tofts, pightles, pingles, and other small quillets of land, about farm houses and tenements, are suffered to lie together idle, some overgrown with . . . unprofitable weeds, which are fat and fertile, where, if the farmer would use the means, would grow sundry commodities, as hemp. . . . The hemp is of great use in a farmer’s house, . . . not only for cordage for shipping, but also for linen, and other necessaries about a house.”43
